It's new, not refurbished, and there's more icing on the cake: You also get a $40 Staples gift card.

I would argue that Amazon's Kindle Fire HD 8.9 is already a steal at $269. Thus, today's deal practically amounts to theft.

For a limited time, and while supplies last, Staples has the Kindle Fire HD 8.9 with Special Offers tablet for $239 shipped (plus sales tax). That's after applying coupon code 46097 at checkout.

But wait, there's more. Staples is offering a $40 gift card by mail when you purchase this model. It's not quite as good as a check or debit card, but I suspect you could burn through $40 at Staples pretty easily. Case for the Kindle? Ream of paper? Inkjet printer? Heck, you could probably sell the card on Ebay for $30 in cold, hard e-cash.

Depending on how you do math (and how much you shop at Staples), that gift card brings your effective price down to $199. But even without it, $239 is a solid score on a capable tablet that Amazon sells for $269.

Capable, and big. At 8.9 inches, this Fire HD excels for things like watching movies, reading magazines, playing games, and hitting up Web pages while you kick back on the couch. It's not quite as large as an iPad, but it's close -- and for a lot less dough.

CNET called this awarding it four stars and praising its fast performance and beautiful screen. (Note that the review included coverage of the 4G model; this one has only Wi-Fi.)

I'd say my only complaint with the tablet is its 16GB of non-expandable storage. If you're heavy into games, movies, and apps, that may not be enough space.

But I reckon for most users it'll be plenty. And you can always pair with a wireless hard drive if you need to stream more local media, just saying. I'm loving this deal, especially for anyone in the market for a dad/grad gift.

Bonus deal: Speaking of big screens, TigerDirect has the Acer UM.WG6AA.B01 G226HQL BBD 22-inch LCD monitor for $99.99, plus around $6 for shipping. Is that not the best monitor model name/number ever? It's an LED-backlit display with DVI and VGA inputs, a 5ms response time, and that colossal 3-year Acer warranty. User reviews are high across the board. Score!
