The new drive is optimized for read performance, which is important for data centers, or storage servers. The new drive supports SATA 3 (6Gbps) standard and is available in both 2.5-inch and 1.8-inch designs. The former is available in 80GB, 120GB, 160GB, 240GB, 300GB, 480GB, 600GB, and 800GB capacities, while the latter is available in 80GB, 240GB, 400GB, and 800GB capacities. Both designs are 7mm thick. Intel says the new SSD uses its 20nm NAND Flash memory and requires just 1.6W during operation and just .65W when idle. The drive offers 500MBps and 450MBps for sequential read and write, respectively. In random performance, it provides some 75K IOPS for reading and 11.5K IOPS for writing. On top of that, the drive offers a slew of enterprise features, including end-to-end data protection, power loss protection, 256-bit AES hardware encryption, and a mean time between failure rating of 2 million hours. It also comes with the top five-year warranty. According to Intel, the new DC S3500 series SSD is designed for use with intensive applications including embedded solutions, search providers, content delivery, Web servers, cloud computing, virtualization, and so on. The new DC S3500 series SSD is available now at the suggesed retail cost of slightly more than $1 per gigabyte.
