The world of aerial drones is about to get a lot more accessible with the successful funding of the Pocket Drone microcopter on Kickstarter. January 16, 2014 9:33 AM PST Put a copter in your pocket. (Credit: AirDroids) It will be the drone that launched a thousand bad jokes. "Is that a drone in your pocket, or are you just happy to see me?" To which the answer is, "It's a drone in my pocket. A Pocket Drone." The small camera-carrying flying machine from AirDroids has rocked its $35,000 Kickstarter funding goal with over $240,000 in pledges and 51 days to go. The appeal is three-fold: the Pocket Drone can haul an action camera (like a GoPro) for taking video from the sky; it folds down into an incredibly compact form for portability; and a ready-to-fly version of the machine goes for a $495 pledge. Add another hundred bucks and you'll get an action camera, as well. The Pocket Drone breaks down a lot of the barriers to entry into aerial photography and videography. It's relatively cheap and ready to fly without having to cobble together a kit. The fold-down tricopter design is also just plain cool. No wonder it's attracting so much funding. The Pocket Drone is fashioned from high-impact plastic and carbon fiber to withstand your learning curve as you crash it repeatedly. It can be guided using an RC controller or an Android app. The payload is up to half a pound and it can stay aloft for up to 20 minutes while carrying a camera. It's the little drone that could. If what you really want out of your Pocket Drone is a robot pet, then you'll love the "Follow Me" feature that commands the copter to follow the phone or tablet controller wherever it goes, like a faithful flying, video-capturing pooch with rotors. Good boy, Pocket Drone. Good boy. The Pocket Drone all folded up. (Credit: AirDroids)
