That's the idea behind Plus Pool, a large, cross-shaped pool that you could practice your backstroke in from just above the waves of the East River. Two years ago, the notion branded as "+ POOL" raised more than $40,000 on Kickstarter, and now it's about to wrap up a second, bigger campaign that could add $250,000 to the dream of river swimming in the Big Apple. Here's the pitch: "+ POOL is designed to filter the very river that it floats in through the walls of the pool, making it possible for New Yorkers to swim in clean river water for the first time in 100 years. "The layered filtration system incrementally removes bacteria and contaminants to ensure nothing but clean, swimmable water that meets both city and state standards. No chemicals, no additives, just natural river water." The madcap pool seems as fanciful as this trampoline bridge in Paris. If you build it, will they swim? The 285,000-gallon Plus Pool would be 164 feet long, 164 feet wide, and 5 feet deep. Each arm would be 32 feet wide, big enough for four lanes. The Plus Pool team wants to raise $250,000 to build a 35x35-foot test pool called the Float Lab off Brooklyn in August; if all goes well, the real thing could be ready for summer 2016.
