The Canadian government is trying to change the way cable providers offer up their programming, according to a new report.

Canada's industry minister announced on Sunday that cable and satellite television providers will soon be required to offer individual channels to customers, rather than bundles that force them to pay for content they don't normally watch. Reuters earlier reported on the news.

The move flies in the face of current cable and satellite programming, which forces customers into packages that can include hundreds of channels they never watch. The Canadian government's idea is to allow customers to buy only the channels they care about and nothing else. Some of the country's providers have already started offering the a-la-carte service.
