But as one of the largest vendors out there, the company has a unique perspective on mobile adoption. In North America, the company projects that 85 percent of mobile subscriptions will be connected to an LTE network by 2019. That stands in contrast to now, when carriers such as Sprint and T-Mobile are just getting their nationwide networks up and running. Around the world, there will be 2.6 billion LTE subscriptions. Smartphone adoption will likewise see massive growth. Ericsson said the world will end the year with 1.9 billion smartphone subscriptions -- that tally will nearly triple to 5.6 billion by 2019. Smartphones aren't the only connected devices, and the carriers have been eagerly pushing things like connected cars, dog collars, ATM machines, and other non-traditional devices to be connected to a cellular network.
