Snapchat users may be snapping past their Facebook counterparts at uploading photos.

Citing an unnamed source at Snapchat, Business Insider said on Tuesday that Snapchat users now send 400 million snaps each day. In contrast, Facebook users upload around 350 million photos per day, BI said, citing a source at Facebook.

The comparison isn't exactly apples to apples. Snapchat's 400 million figure includes both photo and video messages and likely counts all snaps of the same photo sent to different people. But Snapchat might also have an edge over Facebook based on photo uploads alone.

Snapchat didn't unveil a video upload feature until December of 2012, and photo messages that vanish after being viewed is still the site's core function, according to BI. Snapchat also has a much smaller number of users than does Facebook. As more people hop onboard to share snaps of their day, photo upload volume will increase over that found on Facebook.

The 400 million number seems credible given that Snapchat co-founder Evan Spiegel revealed in September that the site was seeing 350 million snaps per day. That volume was up from the 200 million recorded in June.
