November 1, 2013 4:27 PM PDT Air in a wine bottle can be a good thing when put in with a VinEdge wine preserver. (Credit: VinEdge) The dilemma of how to enjoy a single glass of wine from an unopened bottle, without having to worry about quickly drinking the rest of it, is one that many have tried to solve. Plenty of wine preservation gadgets and systems exist to answer this quandary, with most relying on evacuating the air from the bottle in one way or the other. Rarely do they try to put it back in. The VinEdge wine preserver ($29.95) is a simple wine gadget that requires no active participation from the wine drinker (which is a good thing). The spout affixes to the top of an opened bottle and when the user pours a glass, the gadget does the rest. Inside the bottle, a disposable insert -- the Vin-sert -- inflates as wine is poured. Out goes the wine, in goes the air and up goes the balloon-like insert, protecting the remaining contents from coming in contact with air. The system doesn't require a pump to use. Instead, it uses fluid dynamics to replace wine with the same volume of air. The now-inflated tube is discarded when the bottle is (eventually) finished, so buying replacements of the Vin-serts is necessary. But, as one might expect, they are affordable at around 50 cents apiece. Well worth it to never have the air taken out of enjoying a single glass of wine again.
