Chicago-based company Gramovox has built a Bluetooth speaker in the shape of a gramophone horn. Currently seeking $100,000 in funding on Kickstarter, the speaker is designed to recall a bygone era in both form and function. "Our bold design and vintage sound are inspired by the 1920s Magnavox R3 Horn Speaker. Its form and function are a marriage of vintage and modern aesthetics, producing a timeless piece that allows you to stream nostalgia," Gramovox wrote. "As sound waves propagate through the horn, you experience an organically midrange, vintage sound." It's not just a novelty hipster item, though. The steel S-horn, a 3:4 scale reproduction of the 1920s Magnovox R3 Horn Speaker, will be manufactured using 1920s techniques, with the cone spun on a lathe and the neck hydroformed out of metal sheets. The two parts will then be hand-welded together and powder-coated in a black finish, with the logo silk-screen printed on. The wooden bases are of walnut or maple, and inside will be a magnetically shielded 66-millimeter cone driver with an impedance of 8 ohms, a range of 230 to 120,000 hertz, and a signal-to-noise ratio of 105 decibels.
