And the Oscar for the best selfie goes to Ellen DeGeneres.

The host of Sunday night's Academy Awards ceremony challenged viewers to set a record by retweeting a photo she was about to tweet from the front row of the awards show. The photo, which was snapped by Bradley Cooper and included Meryl Streep, Brad Pitt, Lupita Nyong'o, Jennifer Lawrence, captured more than 4,000 retweets in with just a few seconds.

It took DeGeneres' tweet about 45 minutes to surpass the previous photo retweet record holder, President Obama's "Four more years" tweet posted after the president won re-election in 2012. That tweet, which featured an image of the president hugging First Lady Michelle Obama, has been retweeted more than 780,000 times and favorite 295,000 times in about 15 months.

As impressive as that is, DeGeneres' tweet had surpassed 2 million retweets and 900,000 favorites in just two and a half hours and was blamed for helping slow the microblogging platform to a crawl for a few minutes during the ceremony.

How high will it go? That depends on Twitter users -- an apparently the length of Cooper's arm.
